The video that everyone is sharing shows Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the runway at Lagos Fashion Week.

It happened on Saturday night at Federal Palace Hotel. The governor walked for popular Nigerian designer Ugo Monye. He wore a native outfit from the designer’s new collection and joined other models on the catwalk. People in the hall cheered loudly when they saw it was the governor. At the end, he walked back with the designer to greet the crowd.

What happened on the runway

Governor Sanwo-Olu did not come to speak as a governor. He came to support fashion.

On his X page, he wrote that he left governance for a short time to become a model.

“I stepped away from the usual business of governance to walk the runway for the incredibly talented Ugo Monye at Lagos Fashion Week. Lagos continues to grow as a home for fashion, creativity and culture and I am always happy to support the people driving this growth,” he said.

His media aide Jubril Gawat also posted the video and called him “AGBA MODEL” with fire emojis. That post made the video spread faster.

This is not the first time. He also walked the runway in 2023 for designer Emmy Kasbit. So this is his second time as a model at the fashion week.

How people reacted online

Nigerians online reacted with fun and surprise. Many people praised his walk and confidence.

On Instagram, one user wrote “He walks like a model. He ate.” Another person said the governor has a second career waiting for him after office.

Some people said it is good to see the governor support local designers. They said it shows that Lagos State values creativity and young talents.

Others just made jokes and memes about the video, but most reactions were positive and playful.

Why Lagos Fashion Week is always big

Lagos Fashion Week was started in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele. It is now the biggest fashion event in Africa. Every year, it brings designers from Nigeria and other African countries to show their clothes to buyers and press.

The event always draws attention because it mixes fashion, entertainment and celebrity culture. When a governor walks the runway, it becomes news beyond fashion pages. It shows that Lagos sees fashion as part of its economy and identity.

That is why videos from the event always trend in Lagos.
