South African music fans are looking forward to British singer-songwriter Olivia Dean’s first performances in the country. However, while her upcoming appearance has generated excitement, ticket prices have also sparked conversations about how affordable major live music events have become.

Dean is set to headline the 2027 edition of the Milk + Cookies Festival, performing in Cape Town on January 29 and Johannesburg on January 31. For fans who have followed her growing international career, the opportunity to experience her music live is an exciting development.

Fans anticipate her South African debut

Known for her soulful sound and popular songs such as Man I Need and So Easy (To Fall in Love), Dean has built a growing international following. Her appearance is expected to attract fans eager to experience her performances beyond streaming platforms.

The festival will also feature South African artists, including Elaine, Zee Nxumalo, Chelsea Sloan and Jade T, bringing together local and international talent.

The presale on October 28 attracted attention, with hopeful attendees joining online queues to secure tickets. However, access to the presale did not guarantee a purchase, as tickets were available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ticket prices raise affordability concerns

Despite the excitement, ticket prices have become another talking point. According to IOL, general admission tickets range from R1,250 to R2,250, raising questions about whether the experience is affordable for the average music fan.

While some concertgoers may consider the price worthwhile for an opportunity to see an internationally recognised performer, others have to weigh the cost against everyday expenses.

Attending also involves additional spending on transport, food and, for visitors travelling from other cities, accommodation. These costs can make the overall experience considerably more expensive.

Organisers have introduced an instalment payment option, offering attendees the opportunity to spread their payments. However, this may not completely remove the financial barrier for some fans.

A wider conversation about live entertainment

The discussion reflects a growing challenge for live entertainment: creating memorable experiences while keeping them accessible to different audiences.

For some fans, festivals offer more than music, with additional attractions such as food, fashion, art and creative experiences adding to their appeal. Others are primarily interested in seeing their favourite performers and may find the overall cost difficult to justify.

Ultimately, Olivia Dean’s South African debut highlights both the excitement surrounding international live performances and the financial considerations that come with attending them.
