History was made in Dakar this weekend, and one of the world's biggest stars was there to add extra shine.
Senegalese-born global icon Khaby Lame stepped out as an official ambassador for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, Africa's first-ever Olympic event, which opened on Saturday, October 31 at the 55,000-capacity Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio.
Khaby Lame's role at the event
Khaby was named a Dakar 2026 ambassador in March 2026 alongside French actor Omar Sy, Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly, and marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge. But his role this week was very hands-on.
On October 29, he visited the Youth Olympic Village in Diamniadio, meeting Senegal's young athletes at the foot of the Athlete365 House. On October 30, he carried the Youth Olympic flame through Dakar in the final leg of the Flame Tour. Then on opening night, he appeared on stage in a white traditional outfit to unveil a live painting of Sitoé, a young girl symbolizing the Africa of tomorrow.
http://Olympics.com reported a frenzy worthy of a gold medallist, with a crowd swarming the 26-year-old who was born in Dakar before moving to Italy as a child.
His advice to the 2,700 athletes aged 15-17 from around the world competing until November 13 was simple and classic Khaby:
“Don't just focus on the dream, because your obsession can make you lose the journey towards the dream. You have got to enjoy the journey,” he said.
Why his presence matters for young fans
Khaby Lame is not an athlete, but with over 164 million TikTok followers and 250 million combined across platforms, he is the most-followed voice young people actually listen to. His silent comedy mocking overcomplicated life hacks with his signature palms-up gesture needs no language.
For Gen Z watching the Games, Khaby makes the Olympics feel like their culture, not just sport. His presence says you don't have to be a runner to be part of the Olympic dream.
How the Games are using pop culture to pull attention
Dakar 2026 is intentionally blending sport with music, film and TikTok. Alongside Khaby, the opening ceremony featured Baaba Maal, Daara J Family, Dip Doundou Guiss, a lion dance, and a 1,000-artist choreographed map of Africa.
By bringing in Omar Sy from Netflix's Lupin and Khaby Lame, organizers are turning Africa's first Olympic event into a global culture moment, not just a sporting event.
