Simpler Checkouts for All: GTCO Connects GTBank and HabariPay to Google Pay

For everyday shoppers and digital consumers in Nigeria, the experience of paying for online subscriptions, travel bookings, bills, and retail items is about to get a whole lot easier. Recent updates from Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) Plc, along with coverage from business media outlets like the Punch, reveal that GTCO has officially launched Google Pay, making it available through GTBank and its payment subsidiary, HabariPay.

What Google Pay Users Can Now Do

With this new rollout, customers of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) can now link their eligible debit cards directly to the Google Wallet app. Once set up, these users can choose Google Pay at online checkout portals, whether they’re shopping locally in Nigeria or making purchases internationally.

No more fumbling with long card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes for every transaction! Users can authorize payments with just a few taps. As per GTCO’s announcements, Google Pay uses a secure digital token instead of revealing actual card details, providing an added layer of privacy and security against potential data breaches.

Why This Matters for Shoppers and Small Businesses

This integration brings significant benefits for both everyday shoppers and merchants:

  • Fewer Abandoned Transactions: Segun Agbaje, the Group Chief Executive Officer of GTCO, pointed out that many digital retail sales are lost not due to outright payment declines, but because complicated checkouts frustrate shoppers, causing them to abandon their carts. By simplifying the process to just a few clicks, Google Pay helps reduce this friction.
  • Empowering Small Businesses via Squad: On the merchant side, businesses using HabariPay’s Squad gateway automatically have Google Pay enabled at their checkouts, eliminating the need for complex new system integrations.
  • Global Reach for Local Enterprises: Eduofon Japhet, the Managing Director of HabariPay, highlights that merchants set up to accept international payments can effortlessly receive funds through Google Pay from buyers around the globe, including those in the diaspora. This capability significantly broadens the market opportunities for Nigerian businesses.

GTCO’s latest initiative aims to connect traditional banking customers with a powerful merchant gateway, making digital commerce quicker, safer, and more dependable for the entire Nigerian economy.
