Jalang’o Radio Joke Fuels Kenya Online Chat
By Tesini Genesis-George
Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has attracted online attention after joking about a possible return to radio if his bid for the Nairobi Senate seat fails in the 2027 General Election.
The former radio presenter responded humorously to suggestions that he might need to return to broadcasting if his political ambitions do not work out. However, his remarks were not an announcement of a comeback. He said he does not currently see himself returning to the industry.
What Jalang’o Said
According to The Star, Jalang’o was responding to suggestions that he should keep the phone number of veteran radio presenter Alex Mwakideu in case he needs help finding another broadcasting job.
Laughing off the suggestion, he said he had never lost Mwakideu’s number before questioning why some people seemed eager to see him fail politically and return to radio.
He acknowledged that broadcasting remains a financially rewarding career for talented presenters. He also described his political journey as guided by God, saying he would accept whatever direction his life took.
However, he maintained that he did not see himself returning to the profession, making it clear that a radio comeback was not part of his current plans.
Why the Joke Is Getting Attention
The exchange brings attention back to a familiar part of Jalang’o’s public identity. Before entering politics, he built a following through comedy, acting and radio presenting.
The reference to Alex Mwakideu also connects the joke to his broadcasting past. It gives the exchange a personal dimension beyond the usual discussion of election campaigns and political competition.
The remarks have been reported by Kenyan media outlets, while the original exchange and the suggestions surrounding it circulated through social media. However, available reports do not establish the scale of public reactions.
From Entertainment to the Senate Race
Jalang’o was elected Lang’ata MP in the 2022 General Election on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket. He has announced that he will not defend the parliamentary seat in 2027, choosing instead to pursue the Nairobi Senate position currently held by Edwin Sifuna.
His transition from broadcasting and entertainment into elective politics illustrates how public recognition in one field can follow personalities into another.
For now, his attention remains on the Senate race. The radio comeback remains a hypothetical possibility raised in a humorous exchange, not a career announcement.
