Spotify Audiobooks Nigeria: Users Can Now Listen to Books on the App
Spotify users in Nigeria can now listen to audiobooks on the streaming platform following the launch of the service in the country on October 14, 2026. The update gives listeners another way to enjoy books without having to sit down with a physical copy.
According to Spotify’s official newsroom announcement and reports by Pulse Nigeria, the launch is part of the company’s plan to expand audiobook access from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026.
What Has Changed for Nigerian Users?
The new feature allows Nigerian listeners to explore audiobooks alongside the music and podcasts already available on Spotify. The company says its catalogue in the new markets includes more than 350,000 titles, covering different genres and languages.
Users can access audiobooks through a dedicated section in the app or by searching for a specific title. However, audiobook listening is not automatically included in an existing Spotify Premium subscription in Nigeria.
Spotify offers an Audiobooks+ add-on for ₦2,300 per month, providing 15 hours of listening. Users can also purchase additional listening time or buy individual audiobook titles. Free and Premium users can access the service, although some options require payment.
To get started, listeners should update their Spotify app, open the Audiobooks section, select a title and follow the available purchasing or subscription instructions.
Who Will Enjoy the New Feature Most?
The service could appeal to students, busy professionals, entrepreneurs and people who want to learn while carrying out their daily activities.
For example, a commuter travelling through Lagos traffic could listen to a business book instead of spending the entire journey listening to music. A student could listen to a recommended book while walking to class, while someone preparing dinner could enjoy a novel without having to hold a book.
Audiobooks may also appeal to people who find it difficult to make time for traditional reading. They offer a convenient alternative for enjoying stories, biographies, educational material and other books while doing activities that do not require full concentration.
Nigerian authors and publishers could also benefit. Spotify says its publishing arrangements allow participating writers to distribute their audiobooks through other platforms as well, creating another potential route to local and international audiences.
What Does This Mean for Listening Habits?
The launch could gradually change how Nigerians use music-streaming applications. Instead of opening Spotify only for songs and podcasts, users can now consider it a place to discover books and learn new things.
The addition also reflects a wider trend in digital entertainment, where one platform offers several types of content to keep users engaged. Spotify has reported growing interest in audiobooks globally, suggesting that spoken-word content is becoming an increasingly important part of the listening experience.
However, the feature's popularity in Nigeria may depend on factors such as subscription costs, mobile data expenses, the availability of appealing local titles and users' willingness to pay for books.
For now, Spotify's audiobook launch offers Nigerian listeners another way to enjoy literature in their everyday lives. Whether people use it to study, relax or make long journeys more productive, the update expands the choices available to anyone who wants to listen rather than read.
