No Time to Read? Spotify’s New Audiobooks Could Change That!
Spotify audiobooks in Nigeria are a new reality. From October 14, 2026, Nigerians can listen to more than 350,000 audiobooks directly on Spotify, turning traffic jams, walks, workouts, and household chores into time for books.
For many Nigerians, the problem is not a lack of interest in reading. It is finding time to sit down with a book. Spotify’s new feature is designed for busy people who want to enjoy stories and learn something new without needing to read on a screen or carry a paperback everywhere.
Spotify’s audiobook service is available through an add-on called Audiobooks+. Both Spotify Free and Premium users in Nigeria can access it, and it costs ₦2,300 per month.
The monthly plan includes 15 hours of listening time. Only the time you actually spend listening counts, so pausing an audiobook does not use up your hours. However, unused hours do not carry over to the next month.
If you finish your 15 hours before the month ends, you can buy a 10-hour top-up for ₦2,700. You can also purchase certain audiobooks individually if you want to keep them.
#What the Audiobook feature offers#
The feature includes these practical tools for everyday listening:
- Audiobooks section: Search for a specific title or browse recommendations based on the music, podcasts, and books you already enjoy.
- Offline listening: Download audiobooks and listen without using mobile data, useful for people with limited data or unstable internet.
- Sleep timer: Set the audiobook to stop after a chosen time, making it convenient for bedtime listening.
- Cross-device listening: Resume listening from where you stopped on another supported device.
- Page Match: For supported titles, scan a book’s ISBN barcode and move between the print, e-book, and audio versions using page numbers.
# Why it matters to Nigerians
The arrival of Spotify audiobooks in Nigeria could change how busy people consume books. Instead of needing quiet time and a physical book, listeners can enjoy audiobooks while commuting, exercising, cooking, cleaning, or waiting in line. Spotify is positioning audiobooks as a way to use that time productively, building on habits people already have with music and podcasts.
The launch also matters for Nigerian authors and publishers. Through Spotify for Authors, publishers and self-published writers can upload audiobooks, reach listeners in more than 180 markets, and access audience insights. Spotify says these partnerships are non-exclusive, so creators can still distribute their work on other platforms.
That could open a new distribution channel for Nigerian writers, especially those looking to reach audiences beyond local bookshops. Still, the impact will depend on how many Nigerian titles are available, how easily listeners can find them, what audiobooks cost to produce, and what creators earn.
Until now, Nigerians interested in audiobooks have often had to rely on international audiobook platforms, separate subscriptions, or individual purchases. Spotify’s entry brings audiobooks into an app many people already use for music and podcasts.
That convenience could make audiobooks more appealing to people who have never tried them. Instead of downloading another app or managing another subscription, users can find books in the same place they already listen to music.
However, Spotify is not automatically the best option for everyone. People who listen occasionally may find the 15-hour monthly plan useful, while heavy listeners may need top-ups or prefer platforms with different pricing models.
# Who may enjoy it most?#
You may find the audiobook feature useful if, for example:
- You prefer listening to reading, especially after a long day.
- You want to finish books while walking, exercising, cooking, or doing housework.
- You are a student or professional trying to learn without adding more screen time.
- You enjoy bedtime stories but want playback to stop automatically.
- You read occasionally and would rather explore different titles with the monthly 15-hour allowance than buy a full audiobook.
To use the Spotify audiobook feature in Nigeria, update your Spotify app, open the Audiobooks section, and search for the title you want. Choose a book, add Audiobooks+, and press play. You can manage your plan through your Spotify account page.
For people who have always wanted to read more but cannot find the time, Spotify’s audiobooks may offer a simple answer: your next book could begin not on a page, but on your way to work.
