Lagos Finance Summit 2026 Puts Nigeria’s Proposed Online Trading Rules in Focus.

For years, the global trading industry has held major gatherings outside Nigeria, even as Nigerian traders participate in online markets. In October, that conversation comes closer to home.

The Lagos Finance Summit 2026 will run from October 14 to 16 at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event comes as Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) considers proposed rules that could reshape online forex and Contracts for Difference (CFD) trading.

##Summit to bring industry stakeholders together

The three-day event is expected to attract more than 5,000 participants, including forex brokers, proprietary trading firms, fintech companies, banks, payment providers, investors and traders.

“We are building the room the industry has never had in Nigeria,” said Musa Kabul, Head of Marketing and Promotion at Lagos Finance Summit. The summit aims to encourage partnerships and discussions about developments in Nigeria’s online trading market, bringing together businesses and individuals involved in different parts of the industry.

##Why Lagos?

Dubai, Limassol, Cape Town and Bangkok have traditionally hosted major trading industry gatherings. However, Nigeria’s growing retail trading community and expanding fintech sector have strengthened the case for bringing these conversations closer to home.

Hosting the summit in Lagos gives local traders, financial institutions and technology providers an opportunity to meet international companies without travelling abroad. It also gives Nigeria greater visibility in discussions shaping the industry.

For young entrepreneurs and business professionals, the gathering offers a closer look at an industry that relies not only on trading platforms but also on payment services, financial technology and other businesses supporting digital transactions.

##SEC’s proposed rules take centre stage

The summit coincides with the SEC’s proposed Rules on Online Forex Trading and Contracts for Difference, published on September 1, 2026.

The proposed framework addresses registration, capital requirements, operational standards and customer fund protection, including provisions relating to the handling of customers’ funds.

Under the proposals, market-making forex brokers would face a minimum paid-up capital requirement of ₦3 billion, while straight-through-processing (STP) and electronic communication network (ECN) brokers would face ₦2 billion. Technology and platform providers would face a proposed minimum of ₦5 billion.

The proposals could also extend regulatory oversight to offshore platforms serving Nigerian residents. However, these requirements have not yet taken effect and remain subject to the SEC’s regulatory process.

For businesses looking to enter or expand within the online trading market, the proposed requirements could influence operating costs, market entry and how services are offered to Nigerian customers. For traders, the discussions also raise questions about platform accountability and the protection of customer funds.

##Regulation Forum scheduled for October 15

A dedicated Regulation Forum is scheduled for October 15, bringing together brokers, introducing brokers, banks, technology providers, legal practitioners and traders.

According to the organisers, participants will examine the proposals, raise concerns and make recommendations. The forum is also expected to produce a written industry response for submission to the SEC.

The discussions could help market participants understand how the proposed requirements may affect existing operators, prospective entrants and Nigerian traders.

##What attendees can expect

The summit will feature an exhibition with more than 100 platforms, a Speaker Hall, a live Trading Room and an awards ceremony recognising industry achievements.

For sponsors, LFS 2026 offers Headline, Diamond, Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsorship packages, alongside exhibition booths across three grades. These provide opportunities to connect with Nigerian traders, potential partners, banks and payment providers.
