Kano Entertainer Jamilu Garko Rejects Campaign Council Appointment
Kano-based entertainer and political musician Jamilu Garko has rejected his appointment as an assistant director in the entertainment category of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s campaign council, saying he was not consulted before his name appeared on the list.
Garko announced his decision in a statement issued on Monday night. Although he appreciated the governor for considering him suitable for the position, he said he would not participate in the council’s activities until he had been properly consulted.
Why Jamilu Garko Rejected the Appointment
According to reports by Punch Newspapers and Prime Time News, Garko’s main concern was that his appointment was announced without his prior knowledge or consent.
He explained that if the governor’s team had contacted him before including his name on the list, he would have recommended another person for the position instead of accepting it himself.
Garko made it clear that his objection was to the appointment process. He expressed appreciation for the recognition but maintained that he would not take part in the council’s activities under the circumstances.
His response highlights the importance of consulting people before assigning them public-facing responsibilities, particularly when those appointments involve political campaigns and established public figures.
The Role He Was Appointed to Hold
Garko was appointed assistant director in the entertainment category of Governor Yusuf’s campaign council. His name appeared at number 169 on the published list of council members.
The entertainment category can play a role in political campaigns by helping communicate campaign messages, attract public attention and connect candidates with audiences through music and other creative activities.
Political entertainers may also use their public recognition to encourage participation in campaign events. However, being named to a campaign position does not necessarily mean that the person has agreed to take up the responsibility.
Garko’s case illustrates this distinction. His name appeared on the list, but he stated that he would not participate in the council’s activities without prior consultation.
Garko Maintains His Political Position
Despite rejecting the appointment, Garko reaffirmed his commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and said he would continue working towards the party’s success in the 2027 general elections.
He is also the chairman of the Da Hannuna campaign team under the Arewa for Asiwaju group, which supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
Garko’s statement therefore distinguishes his rejection of a particular appointment from his continued political activities. He expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf while maintaining that he would not participate in the governor’s campaign council.
His position shows that rejecting a specific responsibility does not automatically mean withdrawing support from a political party or abandoning other campaign-related activities.
Why the Appointment Has Attracted Public Attention
Appointments involving entertainers and political figures can attract public attention because they bring together public recognition, political relationships and campaign responsibilities.
When a person rejects an appointment publicly, people may become interested in the reasons behind the decision and what it means for the organisation involved.
In Garko’s case, the central issue is consultation. His statement raises a practical question about whether people should be contacted and allowed to accept a responsibility before their names are publicly announced.
Proper communication can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that appointed individuals understand and agree to their expected duties. It can also help campaign organisers avoid uncertainty about who is willing to participate.
However, Garko’s statement does not establish that the appointment was rejected for reasons beyond the lack of prior consultation. His publicly stated explanation remains the clearest basis for reporting the development.
What Happens Next?
Garko has stated that he will not participate in Governor Yusuf’s campaign council until he has been properly consulted. At the same time, he has reaffirmed his support for the APC and its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Whether further discussions will take place between Garko and the governor’s team remains unclear from the reports available.
For now, the development highlights the importance of communication in political appointments. While the appointment recognised Garko’s connection to entertainment and political campaigning, his response shows that public recognition alone does not guarantee acceptance of an assigned role.
