Dangote refinery bets on Al for savings

Dangote Petroleum Refinery is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform that could generate more than $60 million in annual gross operational benefits when the facility operates at full capacity. The move reflects a growing trend among major companies to use advanced technology to improve efficiency, reduce production problems and strengthen their competitiveness.

The platform, called Forge Plant Cognition, was developed by Honeywell Technologies with artificial intelligence capabilities from NVIDIA and computing infrastructure from Dell Technologies. Its first industrial deployment is taking place at the Dangote refinery in Lekki, Lagos.

How the AI Platform Will Help

The technology is designed to help refinery engineers understand how different parts of the facility operate and identify problems that could affect production.

For example, it can help detect equipment issues before they become serious, identify production bottlenecks and recommend adjustments that could improve the refining process. These capabilities could help the refinery reduce unexpected shutdowns, improve production output and obtain greater value from the crude oil it processes.

In simple terms, the AI system uses operating data and specialised engineering knowledge to help workers make faster, better-informed decisions. Rather than simply monitoring equipment, it is designed to help engineers identify the causes of problems and determine possible solutions.

The $60 Million Savings Projection

According to Honeywell’s preliminary assessment, the platform could deliver operational benefits worth more than 29 cents per barrel processed. At full-capacity production, this could amount to more than $60 million in gross annual benefits.

However, this figure is an estimate, not money the refinery has already saved or earned. The actual results will depend on operating conditions, production levels and how effectively the technology improves performance. The estimate also excludes implementation costs.

If the system achieves its intended results, it could help Dangote Refinery reduce production losses, improve equipment reliability and make its operations more efficient.

Why Big Companies Are Investing in AI

Businesses are increasingly using AI for more than chatbots, customer service and office administration. In industries such as petroleum refining, the technology can analyse complex information, identify potential problems and support decisions that affect production and operating costs.

For a large refinery processing substantial volumes of crude oil, even small improvements in efficiency can create significant financial benefits. Preventing equipment failures and improving production processes can also help businesses protect their output and remain competitive.

The initiative could also help strengthen Nigeria’s technical workforce. Dangote Refinery aims to make specialised engineering knowledge more accessible to Nigerian workers, helping them solve operational problems and develop valuable technical skills.

Ultimately, the platform’s success will depend on measurable results. Although the projected $60 million in annual benefits is promising, actual performance will determine how much value the technology delivers to Dangote Refinery and Nigeria’s industrial sector.
